Schiff Hardin believes that excellence in legal practice is largely developed through close contact with experienced lawyers. It is common for a new associate to work with 10 to 20 partners during the first year of practice. In addition, beginning lawyers often work directly with clients, initially in settings involving more senior lawyers and gradually progressing to situations where they interact with clients on their own.

Schiff Hardin Professional Personnel Committee members monitor the workload and mix of assignments for new associates. New associates often work in several substantive areas during their first year with partners from various practice groups. We try to accommodate the preferences of new associates for assignments in particular practice areas when the requests are consistent with client needs. New associates may join a particular practice group at any time, and they are asked to do so after their first full year with our firm.
