Cleaning up contamination in the environment is commonly known as remediation. Remediation takes place in many regulatory programs, in all jurisdictions, and for reasons sometimes driven by outside forces, such as business or real estate sales, by governmental enforcement, or by citizen interest. Schiff Hardin's experience demonstrates our expertise in cleaning up contamination from past disposal practices, accidental spills, and facility operations.

To clean up environmental contamination, common steps are taken:

  • Identify the proper jurisdiction and regulatory authority or program
  • Research and outline the steps necessary to satisfy the legal requirements
  • Identify possible areas of investigation through historic research, inspection and/or interviews
  • Investigate whether contamination exists
  • Characterize the nature and extent of the contamination
  • Identify human health or environmental risks that exist and determine the remedial objectives to be met
