SPOTLIGHT ON...
Children's Support Foundation

In the furtherance of our enthusiastic commitment to serving the charities we assist, Schiff Hardin's Tax-Exempt Organizations practice is proud to present our Philanthropic Spotlight. Each month, we will turn over the microphone to one of the many organizations we work with so that you can learn about some wonderful work that is being done to make the world a better place.

With that, we are proud to introduce you to Children's Support Foundation.

Children's Support Foundation

Children's Village, Inwood House, and Safe Space — three leading New York youth service agencies — founded The Children's Support Foundation ("CSF"), a planned giving collaborative to create lasting support for New York's most vulnerable youth and young families. Together, the collaborative serves more than 30,000 young people and provides donors the opportunity to make a significant impact on child and family poverty in the New York metropolitan area. The agencies, known for their sound leadership and evidence-based programs, offer a spectrum of services which include child welfare, community-based health services, school-based teen pregnancy and AIDS prevention, youth leadership, young adult support services and specialized maternal health and family support services for pregnant and parenting teens.

While planned giving programs often provide up to a third of revenues for medical and higher education institutions, very few human service organizations can afford the up-front costs to staff and maintain this specialized fundraising activity. "By pooling our talent, contacts and resources, each agency can build its expertise and capacity to establish more meaningful relationships with donors that could lead to significant endowment gifts or long-term program support. Future generations will reap the benefits," said Jeff Sobel, Vice President of Development for Safe Space.

The effort is supported by a Professional Advisory Committee, which includes attorneys, accountants and financial planners familiar with planned giving.

The Beneficiaries

The Children's Support Foundation is committed to alleviating the causes of child and family poverty. Together, they intervene with New York City children and youth at every critical juncture of their development. CSF beneficiaries include:

  • Children's Village was founded in 1851 to shelter the homeless immigrant children of New York City's Lower East Side. Today, The Children's Village is a leader in protecting and nurturing some of the most at-risk youth in the New York region, serving more than 1,000 children in residential programs and reaching approximately 6,000 children and their family members in the community each year. Programs include an achievement-oriented residential school, shelters for runway and immigrant youth, street outreach programs, adoption, foster care and numerous programs designed to prevent foster care by keeping families together and children safe.

  • Inwood House, established in 1830 to help delinquent and sexually exploited girls rebuild their lives, is dedicated to helping our most vulnerable young people become healthy and self-reliant adults. Today, Inwood House is a nationally recognized leader and innovator in teen pregnancy prevention, youth development and family support. Through its Maternity Residence and Continuum of Care for pregnant and parenting teens, as well as community and school-based teen pregnancy and AIDS prevention initiatives, Inwood House advances the development of 5,500 New York City and New Jersey youth annually.

  • Safe Space serves nearly 20,000 youth annually and offers an integrated system of progressive services in the following core areas: Children and Family Services, Young Adult Services and Community Health Services. Safe Space continues to be a leader in youth and family services with innovative programs that reflect its mission since 1919: to protect kids, keep them safe and help them grow.

These longstanding social services agencies have a shared mission to support vulnerable youth, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.
